The photos show a pre-rusted sphere after 8 weeks outdoors in the Norfolk UK winter. The natural rust patina will continue develop and evolve over time. To activate or accelerate the rusting process mist your sphere with salt water. To stop the finish developing further rinse any salt residue away and apply a thin coat of oil, linseed or danish oil are best. Multiple coats of oil offer greater protection but will darken and soften the patina. The sphere in the photos has no oil applied.
